Baidu Visualization Map Tracks Chinese New Year Migration

As millions of Chinese travel home to celebrate Chinese New Year this Friday, Baidu has started tracking what is said to be the largest annual migration on Earth, and has presented it as a visualization map.
The Chinese New Year migration map is built from Baidu's location-based services (LBS) open platform data, which is based on more than 5 billion daily positioning requests sent through its products such as Baidu Maps and other apps that use the search provider’s positioning technology and services, according to a Baidu spokesperson.
The visualization map, updated every hour for eight hours daily, illustrates the hottest migration paths as well as the most popular cities and provinces people are traveling to and leaving from.
For example, on Wednesday at 6 p.m., Beijing, Chongqing, and Shanghai were the top three cities people returned to and left from. Clicking on the map also reveals that the most popular cities people return to from Beijing include Baoding, Tianjin, and Chengdu.
